Ultraviolet light has shorter wavelengths (ranging from 400 nm - 10 nm) and frequencies than visible light. The Sun is the source of the full spectrum of ultraviolet radiation, which is commonly subdivided into three categories, most often used in Earth sciences, UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. UV-C rays are the most harmful but are almost completely absorbed by our atmosphere. UV-B rays are harmful rays which cause sunburn. Fortunately, about 95 percent UV-B rays are absorbed by ozone in the Earth's atmosphere. When our skin is exposed to these waves in moderation, it helps to increase the production of vitamin D. In addition to this the sun helps sterilize things such as freshly washed clothes by making certain bacterias inactive. If you buy these waves you will also be able to make certain substances change chemically. This effect is put to use in many ways, a process called “curing”. Water has recently been experimented by treating it with ultraviolet radiation, which serves as a "secondary barrier" to inactivate key pathogens such as adenovirus and other viruses, as well as bacteria and parasites such as Giardia. If the experiments prove both safe and successful than in the future this can eventually be used as a cure to dirty water around the world.
Caution: UV rays do not always produce the effect of sunburn, but do cause reddening and irritation caused by changes in the minute surface blood vessels. In some extreme cases, the skin may be left severely burned and blistered. Though the reddened skin may die and flake off in a day or so, where there has been intense prolonged or frequent exposure, skin cancers can develop.
